Fabio Silva scored a late equaliser to give Borussia Dortmund a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena, after Harry Kane had missed a penalty earlier in the second half.
This was Kane’s first appearance since winning the Ballon d’Or, and Munich paid tribute to him before kick-off, with him making his own entrance separate from the other players. The match itself turned into a difficult night for him in the second half.
Bayern led through Konrad Laimer, who finished in the 38th minute after Michael Olise, who had earlier struck the post, played him through on goal. Kane then saw his penalty strike the crossbar in the 57th minute. Serhou Guirassy levelled the match in the 60th minute after the Bayern striker had been dispossessed in the build-up. Kane did provide the assist for Dayot Upamecano, who restored Bayern’s lead in the 66th minute, but it was not enough.
Silva came off the bench to equalise for Niko Kovac’s side in the 89th minute. Lennart Karl then hit the crossbar with the last kick of the game, and Dortmund held on to remain level on points with Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga table.
Jobe Bellingham had appeared to open the scoring for Dortmund earlier, following a mix-up involving Upamecano. However, a VAR check showed Carney Chukwuemeka colliding with the goalkeeper as Bellingham swept the ball home, and the goal was ruled out.
Bayern came into the match averaging over five goals per home game this season, and they had dominated for long periods. Dortmund’s equaliser was therefore a shock, though it came from neat work by Guirassy, who created the opening that left Kane exposed. Kane had looked to have spared his blushes with his assist, but Silva’s intervention made it a night to forget for Bayern’s No 9.
The result came during a demanding period for Bayern. They have a busy schedule and are without their recovering head coach Vincent Kompany, along with a growing injury list. Luis Diaz is already out, and Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry both went off injured in the first half. Bayern will be pleased to keep their unbeaten record intact, but they missed a chance to open a gap on their great rivals. Silva’s strike means both clubs’ records remain identical.
