STAVANGER, Norway — Michael Olise received his second yellow card in the Champions League on Tuesday, which earned him a red card and a one-match ban for Bayern Munich’s next match against Arsenal.
Harry Kane predicted his teammate will be “gutted” to be suspended when Bayern face the Premier League champions next week.
Olise’s first career sending-off in a senior game gave Norwegian team Viking a way back into a match it looked set to lose, and the hosts salvaged a surprise 3-3 draw against Bayern.
A Costly Moment
The referee was still showing Olise a yellow card for a tactical foul that prevented a Viking counter when the Bayern forward tossed the ball he was holding at Viking captain Zlatko Tripic’s head. That act earned Olise a second booking within seconds, to cheers from the Norwegian home crowd.
With Bayern leading 3-2 at the time, the red card helped Viking back into the contest. Tripic crossed for Herman Haugen, who headed in the 90th-minute equalizer.
Bayern’s Comeback Falls Short
Bayern had been 2-0 down before fighting back with two second-half goals in quick succession from Harry Kane, who has now scored in nine consecutive Champions League games. Luis Díaz had put Bayern ahead with a third goal just before Olise was sent off.
The draw checks Bayern’s momentum after the club opened its Champions League campaign with a statement 5-0 win over another Norwegian side, Bodø/Glimt, last month.
Kane Reacts
Kane said Olise will have to accept responsibility and learn from the incident.
“He’ll have to take responsibility obviously, he’ll have to learn from it,” Kane said after the game. “It’s a shame because obviously we have big games coming up in the Champions League now and he’s going to be gutted to miss those games. But this is football. Sometimes mistakes can happen, it’s life.”
Kane also said Bayern deserved more from the match.
“We should have won the game with the second-half performance,” Kane added. “You take the point and you move on.”
