Cole Palmer will not miss Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United on Saturday, despite being sent off in the Blues’ last Premier League match, a 2-0 defeat by rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
Palmer picked up two yellow cards in the second half. His first caution came for an off-the-ball incident involving Spurs’ Mateus Fernandes. He received his second yellow for a foul on Conor Gallagher. That dismissal earned the England playmaker a one-match ban.
Usually, a suspension like this would be served in the team’s next Premier League match. Palmer, however, will sit out Chelsea’s EFL Cup fourth-round tie away at Liverpool on Wednesday night instead.
Why the Ban Falls on the Cup Tie
Red card suspensions apply across domestic competitions rather than only in the competition where the card was received. Suspensions for an accumulation of yellow cards during a campaign, by contrast, are served in the competition in which the cards were received.
As a result, Chelsea will be without Palmer for their trip to Anfield. He will be available to face Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, three days after the cup tie on Merseyside.
