Farewell Comrades
“FarewellComrades” is a 6 x 52’ documentary series for television, created and produced by Artline Films (France) and Gebrueder Beetz (Germany). The ground-breaking series is about the fall of communism in Europe, from 1975, when Communism still had a strong foothold in Eastern Europe, to 1991, when the Soviet Union, seemingly overnight, collapsed. The relationship between the USSR and its satellite states, and their role in ending communism, will be the main focus of the film.
For the very first time, “Farewell, Comrades!” fully associates Arte’s three branches: ArteFrance, Arte GEIE, and Arte Deutschland/ZDF. Together with the teams in eight former Soviet satellites, the producers of this film will create a compelling, pan-European documentary about the political system that was.
56 Films is the Hungarian Unit for “Farewell Comrades,” in charge of archival and character research, as well as production of the Hungarian segment. Director Réka Pigniczky is joined by award-winning Hungarian journalist and author László Seres (www.hirszerzo.hu) on this project. 56Films will work in co-production with Hungarian Television (MTV), who will provide most of the archives needed for the project.
